Peter Bolam has won the Jersey Bodyboarders first ever Cold Water Challenge in good 3ft glassy surf at La Saline, at the northern end of St. Ouen’s Bay.

The contest got underway just after 7.00 a.m. which felt even earlier for the competitors due to the clocks being put forward during the night. The conditions early on were really good, and almost immediately after the first heat of the day took to the chilly 8.5c water, a set of waves tubed flawlessly along the high-tide sand bank, a perfect way to start the day!

The first heat highlights included a barrel from new competitor Sebastian Bonnier, a bodyboarder from France, who has been living in Jersey for the past couple of years. Colin Crowther found some air on a bowling left, however he failed to complete the manoeuvre.

In the second heat, current Channel Island Champion James Manners, fresh from two weeks bodyboarding in Portugal, continued his impressive form with some nice scoring rides, including a really nice right-hander, getting some air on a down the line roll. Also surfing well in this heat was Simon Watkins, pulling some combination spins, before rolling on the inside shorey.

Heat three saw some good rides by Andy De La Mare, also just back from Portugal. De La Mare found a good hollow section on a speedy left hander to launch a solid roll. This heat though was to belong to club’s chairman Peter Bolam, who took off on a peeling right-hander, spinning off the lip before dropping straight into a hollow little tube ride, followed by another 360 spin on exit.

1. Peter Bolam 25.2 points
