Full Report
Clint Loake has won the Cloud 9 Surf Shop Summer Bodyboard Contest, held in testing conditions at three different surf spots during Sunday evening.
The contest, the first event of the 2010/11 4Season Series, kicked off in good clean 3ft surf amidst a torrential downpour at Petit Port reef, Corbiere.
In what turned out to be the best waves of the day Steve McPhee put in a strong performance to win heat one, just beating Simon Watkins into 2nd place, with Seb Bonnier and Pascal Quemener eliminated in 3rd and 4th places respectively.
The weather deteriorated further for heat 2, making for poor visibility. The heat highlight saw Colin Crowther and Clint Loake enter into a tactical battle for the same wave, Crowther aiming to go right and Loake left. Neither gave way, colliding halfway down the face of the wave, with the judges calling the interference against Loake.
The interference left last years overall series winner Loake in danger of a shock early exit from the contest; however he bounced straight back on the next wave with a solid roll, landing straight into a spinner, taking him back into first place. Crowther went on to take 2nd, ahead of Steve Pinzari and Matt Noel in 3rd and 4th.
Heat 3 was won by Eduardo Afonso, who went all out, performing rolls over the shallowest sections of the inside reef. The battle for second was closely fought out between Andy de la Mare and brothers David and James Fielding. With scores tied at the end of the heat, a count-back was required to determine 2nd place, which went in David Fielding’s favour.
With the waves breaking dry on the inside, the organisers decided to move the contest up to the other end of St. Ouen’s Bay to La Saline, which was 1-2ft with nicely shaped waves.
Once again the heavens opened for the first of the semi-finals, which featured Crowther, Fielding and McPhee. Crowther sat on the southern peak, finding some nice bowling lefts to perform spin roll combos to take the win, ahead of McPhee in 2nd.
The second semi-final between Loake, Watkins and Afonso took place in rapidly deteriorating surf. Despite the tiny waves, Loake still managed to boost some solid rolls and fast spins to win the heat. Afonso landed some clean rolls on the rights to push Watkins back into 3rd.
Due to the poor conditions, once again the contest was moved; this time to the Watersplash where the waves were slightly bigger, albeit with little power.
Crowther got off to the good start finding a couple of lefts, with reverse spins and rolls. Loake then fought back with a couple of solid scoring waves, including a floater reverse on one. Crowther finished the heat with two more left hand waves both posting 7’s from the judges. It was Loake though who went on to take the win with two high scoring rides, the first of which included a double forward followed by a double reverse. Loake then saved the best to last finishing the heat with the only ARS of the day, scoring 9.5 out of 10 from the judges.
3rd place went to McPhee, who surfed well throughout the event, but couldn’t find the combo manoeuvres to challenge for the overall win. This was also the case for Afonso, who made some good rolls; but with mostly single manoeuvre waves, had to settle for 4th spot.
The Jersey Bodyboarders would like to express gratitude towards everyone who helped with the running of the contest despite the deluge of rain.
